Emerging topics in travel medicine 

Join us for our annual Travel Medicine Masterclass Series. This series is designed to provide healthcare professionals with targeted knowledge and clinical skills in travel medicine, specifically on emerging topics in the field. 

This year, we are pleased to present sessions that are part of the PATMF-Kairuki Online Travel Medicine Course. The content is intended for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and allied health practitioners from across the continent to build on existing knowledge within the African context.

Paediatric Travellers

Participants will learn to assess travel-related health risks, provide age-appropriate pre-travel consultations, and recommend vaccinations and preventive measures tailored to children. The class also covers the management of common travel-related illnesses in children, considerations for those with chronic medical conditions, and strategies to ensure safe travel across various global destinations. Emphasis will be placed on current guidelines, emerging infectious diseases, and culturally sensitive care to support the unique needs of paediatric travellers and their families.

The VFR Traveller

​This class focuses on the unique risks and needs of travellers visiting friends and relatives (VFRs). Participants will explore the epidemiology of travel-related illnesses more commonly affecting VFR travellers and understand the sociocultural, economic, and behavioural factors that influence their health-seeking practices. The class aims to enhance pre-travel risk assessment and counselling strategies, improve vaccination uptake, and address barriers to preventive care in this high-risk group. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based approaches and culturally competent care to optimize health outcomes for VFR travellers.

Mass Gatherings 

This session will examine the health risks associated with events such as religious pilgrimages, sporting competitions, and festivals, including the transmission of infectious diseases, heat-related illnesses, crowd-related injuries, and security concerns. The course will provide guidance on pre-travel preparation, vaccination strategies, and outbreak prevention. Emphasis will be placed on risk assessment, surveillance, and the implementation of evidence-based public health measures to safeguard the health of travellers attending mass gatherings.

High Altitude Medicine

In this class, participants will learn about the prevention, recognition, and management of altitude-related illnesses. Participants will gain an understanding of the physiological effects of high altitude, including acute mountain sickness, high altitude cerebral edema (HACE), and high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), as well as strategies for acclimatization and risk reduction. The session will cover pre-travel assessment, fitness-to-travel considerations, and advice for vulnerable groups focusing on evidence-based recommendations to ensure safe and healthy travel to high altitude destinations.

Wilderness Medicine

Participants will learn to assess risks associated with environmental exposures such as extreme temperatures, altitude, animal and insect encounters, and limited access to medical care. The class will cover prevention and management of injuries, environmental illnesses, and medical emergencies in austere settings, as well as principles of field safety, evacuation planning, and improvised care. Emphasis will be placed on practical, evidence-based approaches to support traveller health and safety in wilderness environments.

Travel and Mental Health

Mental health is often overlooked in travel medicine. This class explore the psychological impacts of travel stress, cultural adjustment, jet lag, isolation, and traumatic events, along with strategies for prevention, early identification, and management. The session will also address medication considerations, travel insurance coverage, emergency planning, and resources for mental health support abroad. Emphasis will be placed on providing culturally sensitive and evidence-based care to promote psychological well-being throughout the travel experience.
